Like cosmetics, fashionable people use clothing and accessories as tools to increase their chances of success in the work field. The four principles of fashion are line, details, texture and colours.

Line refers to the shape or cut of a garment. This influence the shape and proportions of the body. Although most models are well proportioned there are certain garment lines that may flatter your body more than others because of your bone structure. Studying the different lines of garments and determining how they affect the appearance of your body is important for successful dressing.


Detail; refers to trims, bottons, decorative seams and accessories. Details attract attention to the wearer’s attractive features. Details are also used to add interest and variety to the garment.


Colours’; are important for creating different looks with clothing. Models should know which colours enhance their personal palette as well as paying attention to those that are currently in fashion. Many people find that acquiring solid coloured garments is a good way to build a wardrobe. Solid colours can be easily combined and can yield effective if not dramatic results. These are also economical because different pieces can be interchanged and solids serve as excellent backgrounds for accessories. Updating and adding variety to your clothing using accessories allows for numerous options


Texture; refers to the feel and structure of the fabric of a garment. The four natural fibres and scores of synthetic fabrics offer lots of texture options. Fabrics come in a variety of grades, weights and types all of which affect texture. In addition to the fiber from which a fabric is made all of the basic yarn construction weaving technique and fabric will also affect texture.


Remember that it is not only what you wear but how you wear; it can make or break your presentation. It is important to realize that the lines, colours, textures or details of clothing that are chosen for you to model on assignment may not always flatter your personal attributes.
